I think can be achieved by defining a smart collection in which one of the filters is “collection” and it refers to another smart collection. this way you will have nested smart collections.
The only thing that will not be optimal here is the fact that visually the collections tree will not be nested.

I think it should work but I havent tested it.

Great tip! Exactly what I was looking for.

Wish there was a way of specifying filters on the collection sets as well. Then you could have smart collections in the hierarchy under that further filtering the results.

Although it states Lightroom 2.* I tried with 3 – it identfies the correct number of photos but get blank page when kicking off the screensaver.

Would buy this with Lightroom 3 support!
