Lightroom Tips – How to quickly remove photograph(s) from specific collections

While it might be obvious to some (not me), removing a photograph from a collection is a simple but not straightforward task. Lightroom can only remove a photograph from a collection only if you’re viewing the specific collection. For example, you are unable to remove a photograph from a collection in the folders view. Same goes if you’re in a different collection from the one you would like to remove from (and there are many other scenarios)…

The easiest & fastest way I found to remove photographs from a specific collection is:

  • Goto library module
  • Click on the specific Collection
  • Select the specific photograph(s)
  • Do one of the following:
    • Right Click -> “Remove from Collection”
    • Photo Menu -> “Remove from Collection”
    • Mark photograph -> Press BACKSPACE

Question.
How do you remove a keyword from an image ?
I only seem to be able to delete and not just remove the key word.
Thanks for any help.

Very simple, once you’re in library module and you stand on an image on the right bar you see two boxes:
A. Keywording – showing list of all keywords for the specific image. simply delete what you want.
B. Keyword List – Showing a list of keywords with V toggle on their left side if they are used for the specific images. simply click on the v toggle and keyword will be removed from image.

Hope I helped,
Nir

What if the “Remove from Collection” link is greyed out? What does that mean? (Sorry, I don’t know why it’s like that either, or what I did!?) Thanks.

Ok – figured it out! On the left panel under “Collections”, I have a Collection Set titled “Wedding” and two collections within it “5D” and “Xti”. When I had the “Wedding” Collection Set highlighted and selected focus on a single image, right-click and “Remove from Collection” was greyed out. When I highlighted the “5D” Collection and then right-clicked the same photo, now “Remove from Collection” was available. Odd.

Bummer – since I flagged these images as reject while in the “Collection Set”, when I change back to the Collection — the flags are gone!? So I cannot select them all at once or filter from the Collection and them remove. This sucks.

After selecting the image/images in Library mode, the “Delete” keyboard key (remove from collection) doesn’t work – but “Alt+Delete” (remove from catalog & collection) and “Ctrl+Alt+Delete” (remove from catalog/collection/disk) does (with a confirmation dialog). Using LR 2.5 =)
